VMware ESX and ESXi

VMware technology in our data centres virtualises computing - helping our customers to become more agile, responsive and profitable. VMware ESXi (formerly ESX) is an enterprise-class, type-1 hypervisor developed by VMware for deploying and serving virtual computers on single server hardware or across a cluster of servers - providing high availability, fault tolerance and more scalability than a traditional standalone server OS. As a type-1 hypervisor, ESXi is not a software application that one installs in an operating system - it hosts different operating systems - which is why it is considered the most cost effective server computing strategy for enterprises today.

What is the difference between VMware ESX and VMware ESXi?

VMware ESX and VMware ESXi are both bare-metal hypervisors that install directly onto server hardware. Both provide industry-leading performance and scalability. VMware ESX relies on a Linux operating system - called the service console that handles scripts, third party agents, backups and system management. ESXi is a lighter-weight hypervisor with no service console. ESX 4.1 was the last version of ESX server. After vSphere 5, only ESXi is available.

The free-version of VMware vSphere 5.1 ESXi has some limitations in that the server hardware that runs it can only have 32GB memory, cannot be centrally managed by vSphere vCenter Server and lacks advanced features such as vMotion, DRS, SDRS and FT. It also doesn’t have a writable API - so VMs cannot be cloned as part of a VM backup process.

Note: Automated Veeam Backup & Replication scripts - a pay monthly hosted service available from Save9 is limited so it can only backup VMs hosted in the 'non-free' VMware ESXi edition VMs. Contact us directly if you are looking to automate backups on your free editions of VMware vSphere ESXi - Save9 can help provide a solution.

Microsoft Hyper-V

Microsoft-Hyper-V-Logo-Save9

Microsoft Hyper-V technology virtualises hardware in our data centres to provide an environment in which you can run (i.e. 'host') multiple operating systems at the same time on one physical computer that is running Hyper-V. Hyper-V enables you to create and manage virtual machines and their resources. Each virtual machine is an isolated, privately accessible virtualised computer system that can run its own operating system. The operating system that runs within a Hyper-V virtual machine is called a guest operating system - and you can securely and remotely access multiple guest operating systems and the the host Hyper-V server platform they reside on.

Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 and Hyper-V Server 2012 provide a simple and reliable virtualisation solution to help organisations improve their server utilisation and reduce costs. It's important to know that the two different versions of Hyper-V Server 2012 are available from Save9. Hyper-V is either installed on top of a Windows Server 2012 or it can be installed as a standalone hypervisor. Hosted by Save9 - both Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 and Hyper-V Server 2012 can consolidate customers’ existing IT environments - leveraging their existing provisioning, management processes and support tools.

What is the difference between Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V and Hyper-V Server 2012 R2?

Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 systems have the required components and management tools for you to get started with Microsoft virtualisation very quickly. The required components include Windows hypervisor, Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management Service, the virtualization WMI provider, and other virtualization components such as the virtual machine bus (VMbus), virtualization service provider (VSP) and virtual infrastructure driver (VID).

Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 (note the subtle difference in names) is the stand-alone product for budget conscious customers - it contains the Windows hypervisor without a GUI (Graphical User Interface), a Windows Server driver model and virtualisation components. Save9 can recommend the free edition of 5nine Manager as a method of managing Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 virtual machines with a GUI.
